Orange is the new Black

Being a civil engineer i was always into drawings and perspectives but my love for designing increased when i started giving attention to my needs,my likes and when i actually started exploring the real ketaki out of me and this is where life finally took me to.

Inspired from the american comedy series title,I thought of going with the orange and black combination for my living room cum kitchen. My client Mr. Sarvanan,a south indian man wanted to come out of his comfort zone and he suggested me to go with a subtle but at the same time a classy look for his kitchen since it was that part of his house rather we can say his living room which cannot be ignored.

The kitchen is designed in a foreign way keeping in mind the height of Mrs. Sarvanan and her elder daughter.I remember she once told me during my visits to the site that, ketaki i want the kitchen to be designd in my own way, according to my likes and dislikes. The platform is totally designed keeping in mind her requirements.

The cutting and chopping counter would have been incomplete without the pink and red hanging lights which are further adding life to the room overall. How can i forget the focus lights at the top over the ceiling. Its just the best way to light up the kitchen counters and platforms whenever you want. The cream coloured fan and the fridge at the corner signifes a ray of hope in the dark.

From a designers point of view ,I did not want to break the continuity of the ceiling. It was therefore necessry that the kitchen and the living room ceiling should go hand in hand in order to keep the fluency and rhythm, the two most important principles of design intact.

I am basically a person who likes things to be sorted whether at home or work.Everything should be at their proper place, neat and clean.I have tried implementing the same fact in my design too.I have placed the microwave and the juicer seperate and i have designed a proper seperate corner for the same away from the platforms which ultimately serves the idea of cleanliness ad neatness(less messy, more clean).

Now coming to the tiles, selecting the materials is more of a tough job than designing is what i realised during the course of time.I did not wish to go for those common floral patterns and so altogether i thought of giving it a refreshing look which would lead to an adrenaline rushing through the woman working out there.

I was pretty sure that though my concept is of a foreign non-minimalistic modular kitchen,I never would want to lose the indian cham from my design which i managed to maintain with the black granite platform surface that i have used in my design. My idea of grey with black was just to make the room brighter that would tend to increase the enthusiasm of the lady working in there.

I have mixed the ceiling with the walls with the help of orange colour so that the indirect light effect could be easily seen along with the CFL's runnig down the walls.

Mmm, I will be frank.I was very much confused when it came to choosing chairs for the dining cum chopping area.Whether to go with the bar one's since the platform height was 40" tall or to go with our regular one's.Finally then, keeping the monotony of the room undisturbed i went with the medium sized antique brown chairs.

Now the question arises what's catching up your minds? How would you use some of these ideas at your home?Keep on reading more of my blogs for the same till then and i would be back soon with my next blog.
